Why you need rent receipts
To claim HRA exemption in the old tax regime, your employer asks for proof of rent, usually in January–February. Without it, they deduct extra tax from your salary. You can still claim HRA while filing your return, but you need receipts as proof if the tax department asks.
What a valid rent receipt includes
- Tenant's and landlord's names
- Address of the rented house
- Rent amount and the month it's for
- How it was paid
- Landlord's signature
- Landlord's PAN, if yearly rent is over ₹1 lakh
- A revenue stamp, if rent over ₹5,000 is paid in cash
Paying by bank transfer or UPI is best, because the bank statement backs up your receipts.
Important: only make receipts for rent you actually paid. Claiming HRA with false receipts is tax evasion and can lead to penalties.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a receipt for every month?
Most employers want one receipt per month, or one for each quarter. This tool makes one for every month in the period you choose.
Is a revenue stamp required?
Only when rent above ₹5,000 is paid in cash. The landlord signs across the stamp. For bank transfers, UPI and cheques, no stamp is needed.
My landlord doesn't have a PAN. What do I do?
If yearly rent is over ₹1 lakh and the landlord has no PAN, they need to give you a signed declaration saying so, with their name and address.
Is my data stored anywhere?
No. The receipts are made in your browser. Names and addresses are only saved on your own device so you don't have to retype them. Use "Clear names & address" to remove them.
