How this is worked out
- Your expenses grow with inflation until you retire, and keep growing after.
- The corpus must pay those rising expenses every year until the age you plan for, while the rest keeps earning the after-retirement return.
- Your existing savings grow at the before-retirement return; the SIP covers the gap.
What is the FIRE number?
FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) followers aim for 25 times their yearly expenses, based on withdrawing 4% a year. In India, higher inflation means many planners suggest 30–35 times to be safe.
